How Breeding Works in Palworld

Breeding is how Palworld players manufacture rare Pals, chase perfect passive skills and fill in the Paldeck without weeks of hunting. The species that hatches is never random — it is decided by a hidden number every species carries, plus a short list of hard-coded exceptions. This guide explains the whole system as it works in Palworld 1.0.

Setting up: the Breeding Farm

The Breeding Farm unlocks at Technology Level 19. Build it at a base and assign exactly one male and one female Pal — any two species can be paired; they do not need to be related. Put Cake in the farm's storage box: each egg produced consumes Cake, so a farm without Cake simply stops.

After a while the pair produces an egg. Pick it up and place it in an Egg Incubator; the egg's type and size already tell you what is inside — the species was fixed the moment the egg was laid. Incubation time depends on the species and the egg's size.

The CombiRank formula

Every species has a hidden value called CombiRank (sometimes called “breeding power”). It never appears on any in-game screen, but it completely determines normal breeding outcomes. The scale runs from 10 up to 3,100 and works backwards from intuition: the rarer and stronger a Pal is, the lower its rank. Jetragon sits at 70; Lamball, one of the first Pals you ever catch, is 3,050.

When two Pals breed, the game averages their ranks and rounds up:

Child rank = floor( (Parent A + Parent B + 1) ÷ 2 )

The egg then hatches into whichever breedable Pal's own CombiRank is closest to that average. That is the entire system — and it is why a calculator helps: with 299 species on one hidden scale, nobody can eyeball the nearest neighbour. Worked example: Penking (2,070) + Bushi (1,560) averages 1,815, and the closest rank in the pool is Sibelyx at 1,810. Penking + Bushi was the famous route to Anubis in early access, but in 1.0 it produces Sibelyx — the rebalance moved the ranks.

One consequence worth knowing: a child can never be rarer than the midpoint of its parents, so you cannot stumble into a legendary from two commons. Breeding “upward” is done in steps, chaining mid-rank Pals as bridges.

The exceptions

Same species always breeds true. Two Anubis parents hatch an Anubis, every time. This is also the only way to obtain the legendary and raid Pals: Jetragon, Frostallion, Paladius, Necromus, Bellanoir Libero and friends have no cross-species route at all.

Special combinations override the formula. 135 exact pairings always hatch a fixed Pal, usually a variant: Relaxaurus + Sparkit → Relaxaurus Lux, Vanwyrm + Foxcicle → Vanwyrm Cryst, Frostallion + Helzephyr → Frostallion Noct. The full special combos list has all of them.

One pair is gender-dependent. Katress + Wixen hatches Katress Ignis when Katress is the mother and Wixen the father — and Wixen Noct when the genders are reversed. It is the only pair in the game where the parents' genders change the species.

Two Pals cannot breed at all. Panthalus and Astralym cannot enter a Breeding Farm, so they can neither parent nor be hatched.

Eggs: type and size

An egg's type follows the child's primary element, so the egg already hints at what will hatch:

Child's elementEgg type
NeutralCommon Egg
GrassVerdant Egg
FireScorching Egg
WaterDamp Egg
ElectricElectric Egg
IceFrozen Egg
GroundRocky Egg
DragonDragon Egg
DarkDark Egg

Eggs also come in sizes, up to Huge. Size reflects the species inside — big Pals come from big eggs — and larger eggs take longer to incubate.

What the species result does not decide

Species is deterministic, but the child itself is rolled separately: its gender, passive skills and IVs are inherited through their own mechanics, with passives drawn from both parents plus random rolls. Serious breeders therefore use the calculator in two steps — first lock in a pair that hatches the right species, then repeat the pairing until the passive rolls line up. Palworld 1.0 also added Mutated Eggs: a small chance for a pairing to produce a mutated offspring with exclusive passive skills, which certain cakes can make more likely.

What changed in Palworld 1.0

The 1.0 release (July 2026) expanded the roster to 299 Pals and rebalanced CombiRank values across the board. Many memorised early-access routes silently changed: Penking + Bushi no longer makes Anubis (it makes Sibelyx now), and former shortcut targets such as Faleris, Orserk, Grizzbolt, Lyleen and Shadowbeak were locked to same-species breeding — you catch them, you do not cross-breed them. Any calculator or chart still showing the old sub-200-Pal roster or the old 10–1,500 breeding-power scale is out of date; every result on this site is computed from the 1.0 game table.
